Juvenile Mule Deer

Sometimes you get the shot you want, sometimes they stick their tongue out at you!

I was on my way out of Inglewood Bird Sanctuary when a Mule Deer Doe and two fawns crossed the path in front of me. The fawns were very cute, but they quickly made it clear how they felt about me.

These grasses were lit up like a Christmas Tree in the morning light. They were completely covered in frost and the ice crystals sparkled beautifully. I saw them on my way in for a walk at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and almost didn’t go back because I was excited to see what birds might still be hanging around so late in the season. At the last minute I decided to turn around to take advantage of the beauty I knew to be there rather than hurrying in to see what else might be there. I’m glad I did because the bird sanctuary was extremely quiet, and I made my best images of the day with these grasses. It’s a little life lesson that I’m going to have to remember…

Perching Northern Flicker

I saw this Flicker while I was at Carburn Park. Initially it was on the ground but it spooked into a tree when I approached. It didn’t seem to mind me being close while it was perched, so I was able to get very close and make a number of images.

Hooded Mergansers at Carburn Park

I was out for a walk at Carburn Park and was very surprised to see a pair of Hooded Mergansers. I stopped to watch and found several more amongst the mass of birds swimming in the lake. These birds are very rare for Calgary and they really only stop here during the spring and fall migration, so it was pretty cool to see them today!

Fall Colors

The fall colors in the Calgary area are not typically very colorful, but very beautiful nonetheless! I was taking pictures of birds on the lake at Carburn Park when my camera chose to focus on this nearby leaf instead of the far away birds. I loved the golden hues and the creamy background in the scene, so I immediately made the image.
